Power Plough

Objective

The Power Plough is an essential exercise for learning how to steer the skis (drifted turns with active turning of the legs to create a turn shorter radius than skis natural radius). By learning how to steer the skier will not need to rotate or swing their body over to the inside in order to create a turn.

Description

Drift down the fall line in the plough position. With your outside leg, focus on pulling your toes towards your knees while developing balance on that ski. In this position you will feel the ski begin to turn, actively allow this by turning your leg within the hip. Keep your knees inside your plough so you remain on the inside edges of your skis. If the outside ski flattens onto the snow it will not turn easily.

Tip: To really get the feeling of the ski steering, you can also try to focus on keeping your thighs as parallel as possible, with your knees this far inside you will get a better edge angle for steering.

Variation / Progression

A nice progression from this (although much harder) is the Javelin Turn
